Irene is a strong woman. She isn’t always conventional or particularly ladylike, but she is a fierce mother who is always supportive of Abigail. She is stubborn and cannot tolerate helplessness (in fact she is probably quite scared of the feeling).

Tobias is clever, quiet and observing. He hates injustice, and thinks about the world in a very logical un-prejudiced manner. It is for this reason that he loves Irene, for she has never been held back by the illogical expectations of society. Despite this, he is afraid that her fearlessness will be passed onto Abbey. Abbey means the world to Tobias and he is very over-protective of his little girl.

Finn is a hard working man. He values family, and loves his pharmacy. His only weakness is his loved ones, he would do anything for them and spoils them as much as possible with the little he has. He has arthritic hands which makes mixing the chemicals in his pharmacy near impossible. But he does not let this physical limitation cripple his spirit.

Horace Wetherby is a clumsy man with a love for creature comforts. He never goes looking for trouble, and only ever wishes for peace and quiet (and maybe a nice cup of tea... and a cake or two). He has never had to work hard, and often has a warped, aristocratic view of the world. He believes that children should be quiet, and everyone should keep to their place in society. Though he can be stupid and patronizing, he is never cruel on purpose.

William Hartley sees everything in black and white. He is not one for understanding or compassion. He is terrified of weakness, and often projects his own weakness onto his brother and father. Though he is well educated and very clever in some respects, he often acts like a misguided child. He is addicted to power. When he was a child he was very powerful but when he moved to England he was just the same as anyone else. Ever since he lost this power he has been striving to regain it.

The Cook is comical and friendly, plump and round, and with rosy cheeks.
