A bunch of unruly and bright sixth formers. A maverick English teacher and a fresh faced supply teacher. A Headmaster obsessed with the league tables and the history teacher who thinks he’s an idiot.

In Alan Bennett’s award winning play, sex and sport play just as much a part in these teenager’s lives as historical fact and poetry. But will the teachers be able to put aside their own squabbles to help their students navigate the anarchy of adolescence.

In this hilariously thought-provoking play we question the purpose of education and the value of history.

Following highly successful productions of Spring Awakening and Lord of the Flies, we return to the Greenwich Theatre with one of Alan Bennett’s most popular plays.

The Headmaster

A man with dreams of grandeur for his school and sees the 8 Oxbridge boys as a ticket to raise the class of the school. He has an authority that garners no respect amongst his staff, who are infinitely more compassionate and intellectual than this geographer.

Males, aged 40 to 60 from United Kingdom

Acting experience: Previous unpaid speaking roles - Previous paid speaking roles
Attended drama school: Yes

Hector

The maverick English teacher who uses his lessons to instil poetry and silliness in his boys to protect them against the heartache of life. His fondness for the boys, however, goes beyond the classroom and onto his motorcycle. He is quick witted yet sensitive. Previous castings should bare no impact on your suggestions; a big personality is what is required, with an underlying sensitivity.

Mrs Lintott

An astute historian. Perhaps the most perceptive of the staff. She is most responsible for the good grades that have allowed the boys to be eligible for Oxbridge. Her brutal honesty is matched only by her fondness of the boys.

Females, aged 45 to 65 from United Kingdom

Acting experience: Previous unpaid speaking roles - Previous paid speaking roles
Attended drama school: Yes

Akthar

Of Indian origin. While all boys are studious, Akthar carries with him the traditional steely commitment to study that can be seen as stereotypical of his background and which outstrips that of his classmates. Perhaps the less ‘jovial’ of the group.

Males, aged 18 to 25 from United Kingdom

Acting experience: Previous unpaid speaking roles - Previous paid speaking roles

Crowther

While he rarely partakes in the theatricalities of the boys, Crowther is an amateur actor and up on his art.

All suggestions for the boys should be male, have a playing age of 18 and have decent singing voices. Ability to play the Piano to high standard is beneficial.

Dakin

The heartthrob of the group. Handsome enough to have sexually conquered the headmaster’s young secretary, be the object of attraction for Posner and to tempt Irwin, a fresh-faced supply teacher. Dakin has a way with words and is good at pressing his point. Desperately seeking the praise of Irwin.

Lockwood

Perhaps the most opinionated of the group, Lockwood can sometimes come across as confrontational. He engages in debate and will happily argue his opinions.

Posner

Must have a youthful singing voice that is near perfect. He is troubled by his sexuality and is forlorn that Dakin does not reciprocate his affections. He is equally as intelligent as Akthar and isn’t afraid to voice his opinions.

Rudge

Rudge is the least intelligent and least likely, in the eyes of the headmaster, to gain a place at Oxford or Cambridge. He plays sports and has the physique akin to a rugby player. His bluntness and his frugal way with words make him appear dim-witted but he can hold his own amongst the boys.

Scripps

MUST play the piano to a high standard and be proficient in underscoring scenes. Scripps is a Christian, and applies his beliefs to the work he does. He is pragmatic and has a dry wit.
