Short Film "Late"
When Maya refuses to sneak out to a local nightclub, her best friend Tina begins to question why Maya has been acting strangely lately and teases her about a guy she likes called Ryan. Maya dodges Tina’s questions explaining she doesn’t feel well and rushes off in a hurry. Coming from a strict but loving single-parent family, much responsibility falls on Maya’s shoulders in the frequent absences of her mother, Julia, a hard-working nurse who does her best to provide for the family. After Julia leaves for a night shift, Maya spends the evening, as she often does, looking after her elderly grandmother and younger sister, Eva. However, something is clearly weighing heavily on Maya’s mind and after everyone has gone to sleep, she decides to sneak out and go to the night club to find Tina to tell her something very important. Lost in the club and unable to find Tina, Maya sees Ryan dancing with another girl. Feeling overwhelmed and confused Maya leaves. When she gets home, the reality of the situation begins to dawn on Maya who starts to break down but quickly pulls herself together to look after Eva who has been having nightmares. The two sisters comfort each other and fall asleep together side by side. The following morning, we hear Maya speaking quietly on the phone to someone. The final scene ends with Maya waiting for a bus, presumably to a health clinic. As the bus pulls up to the stop and the doors open, Maya stands in front of them for a long time deciding whether to get on or not.
