PROTESTING BLACK GENTLEMAN IN AUDIENCE
Black Actor (playing age 28-50) - At least one acting role in TV, short film, feature film or theatre, otherwise drama training is necessary. It is a role that requires authority, warmth and dramatic emotion.
The scene involves Bernard Manning approaching the table of a black couple in his club and the initial trepidation and intense embarrassment the lady experiences as she reluctantly becomes a part of his moderately racist routine and gags (very mild compared to Manning's historic jokes, and newly written material which other black comedians have touched on many times before, so it shouldn't be offensive to even the majority of the black community when considered in context).
The climax of the scene involves her husband standing up in protest and making a powerfully emotive and hugely applauded plea to end racism and for all ethnicities to join together in harmony and friendship. He has a gentle warmth that makes his words emotionally moving to virtually everyone present and the speech inspires an incredible reaction from the audience.
Based on a true story, partly autobiographical, and set in the early 1960s in Manchester, the story centres on a rather unforgettable trip for 54 year old, undiscovered singer songwriter Paul, who ventures into the audience at Bernard Manning’s club to experience an evening’s entertainment of comedy and music. But what starts off as a night of controversial comedy from Manning, gradually unfolds into a series of bizarre, surreal and unexplainable events involving politically incorrect conduct, chaos, confusion, farce, absurdist incidents and unexpectedly jaw-dropping surprises. Many puzzling questions inescapably arise, such as ; why are the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Laurel & Hardy still unknown and without any success in showbusiness, and why are they all looking for their first big break on the same dingy evening at Bernard Manning’s modest little club in the wrong, deprived part of urban Manchester? Why are they all 54 years old? And why do they all have an unsettling physical resemblance to Paul?
The film combines elements of Back To The Future, The Wizard of Oz and Wierd Al Yankovic with moments of moving drama interweaving surreal, slapstick and physical comedy. Credits for some of the lead actors already cast include Captain America: The First Avenger, Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, Sweeney Todd, Avenue Q.
The movie is being shot in both black and white and colour on 4K digital cine cameras. It will be entered for International Film Festivals with a view to acquiring worldwide distribution and features several songs (original and classic hits covers) a music score and special effects.
Because of the production’s Very Low Budget status as an independent British feature film, the fee for the role will be a combination of an advance payment of £70 for the one day of filming for this role, plus a day rate fee of several hundred Pounds which will be deferred with a contract until the movie secures distribution, and then additional bonuses from the movie’s future Gross earnings.
The contract will contain all the relevant Equity/PACT contractual requirements to ensure all future royalties and fees can be paid to both actors and crew who are all being hired on this Deferred Agreement basis that includes future bonuses from the Gross. Production Accountants will distribute future payments and all cast and crew will be able to regularly receive and inspect the accounts.
After the application process, actors will be sent more details about the audition video that needs to be submitted. There's not enough space on this website's posting page to include it here.
