In Cradley Heath, The Black Country, 1910, the women chain-makers had had enough of being paid inconsistent and pitiful wages for hard work, so went on a 10 week strike, demanding a proper minimum living wage.

This revolution was led by suffragist and trade unionist Mary Macarthur, who is an incredibly pivotal figure in West Midlands history, yet is a name most people have never heard of. Although our short film takes place in a period of real history and serves to provide a lot of history and information to the viewers, it follows fictional main characters in a fictional factory. Sallow Iron Works is the last chain manufacturer in Cradley Heath for the strike to reach to, due to the fierce rule of its founder: Mr. Sallow. His workers fear speaking up against their unfair treatment and poor pay, due to Sallow’s reputation.

One young woman, however, will not stand for it, and has to fight to convince her co-workers to do the same. Eliza has reached a point where if she doesn’t act, soon she won’t be able to put food on the table. After investigating, she discovers that the rest of the town feels the same way, and is on the brink of revolution.

ELIZA

Eliza is a young woman who has made chain in a factory to support her large family, since a very young age. By the start of our story, she has long grown tired of working long, hard hours for barely enough money to keep her fed. Despite being pressured by her co-workers not to act up, for fear of them losing their jobs all together, Eliza comes to the realisation that she must go on strike and fight for what she believes in.

Female, aged 18 to 25

Applications closed 8 October 2019.

MR. SALLOW

According to his workers, Mr. Sallow is a stone-hearted, callous, selfish authoritarian. If you were to ask him to summarise himself though, he would simply identify as a factory owner offering a certain amount of money in exchange for chain. If they don’t like their wages, they can go and work elsewhere; he’s not going to change his mind.

Male, aged 50 and over

Applications closed 8 October 2019.

BESSIE

Bessie is Eliza’s nan, and has made chain in the factory since she was a young girl. Over the years, this has given her the skill to weave chain together, as if she were knitting a scarf, but also leaves her with an old-fashioned mind set. She has seen worker’s revolutions come and go without changing a thing and implores Eliza to just get to work and not to complain. Despite this, she acts as somewhat of a comic relief character and speaks with a very thick Black Country dialect.

Female, aged 60 and over

Applications closed 8 October 2019.

HENRY

Henry is Mr. Sallow’s personal assistant and is very rude and dismissive towards people of a lower position than him.

Male, aged 20 to 40

Applications closed 8 October 2019.

MARY MACARTHUR

Mary is a historical figure, Mary Macarthur was a suffragist, trades unionist and General Secretary of the Women’s Trade Union League. In 1910, in the Black Country, she urged women chain-makers to go on strike to fight the unacceptable ways that they were treated and paid. Though she was one of the key figures in women’s pay and West Midlands history, she is often forgotten. Through this story, we aim to highlight what she fought for and how it still affects us today.

Female, aged 27 to 35
