Self Tape: Due to the improvised nature of the dialogue in the series we ask that you send a self tape introducing yourself and telling a story of your earliest memory.

Dementia Diaries is a multi-platform series based on personal experiences of Creator Clare Pickering and produced by Monster & Bear (Dee-Brief). 40-year-old Cathy reluctantly returns home to oversee the care of her dementia-riddled mother, Rose. Amidst Rose’s increasing paranoia, and Cathy’s delusional fear that dementia is contagious, can their dysfunctional relationship be salvaged before Rose disappears into memory oblivion?
With regard to the approach I like to take with contained dramedies like this, I am a firm believer that humour shines through authenticity. By grounding performances firmly in reality, and focusing more on the humour of the circumstance, as opposed to focusing on a 'gag' per se. Why I think Dementia Diaries lends itself to the below process so well, is because when we go through these dark and difficult times, humour is actually the only way we tend to survive. By having self- awareness around the absurdity of life sometimes. In a similar fashion to a previous contained series that we filmed (called Dee- Brief) we took the approach of improvised drama. In this way the dialogue for a scene was never written, simply an outline which guided the performer through A, B, C, D, etc. his approach obviously involves character and chemistry and connection prep, which would need to be done prior to heading into the shoot. There are a variety of ways in which to do this, but below are some of the ways I would love to work ( with the mother- daughter chemistry) prior to filming. This is an intimate process which requires instinct in both directions, from actors and director, and an emphasis on collaborating every step of the way. I love this way of working as I think it gives actors a different level of freedom in what they bring to a role, and my job is simply to guide that - and provide that safe space on the filming days.
