Auditions Open for 'A Midsummer Nights Dream'

Auditions Open for 'A Midsummer Nights Dream'

Victoria, Australia
Listed by View details

Synopsis:
Hermia and Lysander are in love, but Hermia’s family have other plans for her - pushing for her to marry Demetrius, even going as far as to threaten her with execution or exile to a nunnery. The young lovers flee to the forest with the plan to elope, but the forest is filled with some colourful characters: A troupe of bumbling wannabe actors, fairy spirits quarrelling, and Demetrius hot on their trail with Helena chasing him hopelessly. And when these worlds collide, the night becomes rife with mischief, mayhem and confusion for all.

Directors note:
While many works of Shakespeare can be interpreted into different eras or settings, I believe context for the work is a key element that can make the changes exciting but still familiar. For this production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the goal is to blend the narrative’s themes of love, independence and old world vs. new world along with keeping elements of Shakespeare’s language and performance style, in order to do this the play will be taking place in 1960’s England. Along with this approach to the human world, the fairies will be less traditional fae and more along the lines of pagan spirits or druids, blurring that line between reality and fantasy.

Due to the setting the production will use the traditional prose and script with minor edits to dialogue, and we will be asking actors to do English accents, but feel free to experiment and choose regions of Britain that you believe will best suit the character.

Director: Kira Zirnsak
Assistant Director: Adam Forgione
Production Manager / Stage Manager: Louisa Carpinteri
