'rats & butterflies' is a drama following Francis Grover, a down and out Victoria Police officer on probation. On the morning we're with him, Francis has a disciplinary hearing to plead his case & get his job back. Mia, Francis' wife, holds reservations of his doing so due to their rocky relationship. Francis, ever the stoic, insists things'll get better once he's working again. But following tough conversations with Mia & his now deceased brother John, Francis' commitment to the hearing begins to waver and it becomes clearer to him that he has bigger concerns threatening him and his marriage.

Thematically, 'rats & butterflies' looks at the strength in being vulnerable, and the dangers in suppressing your emotions. Tonally melancholic & meditative, it finishes optimistically as Francis opens up about his mental health struggles & drops his macho persona. The film is an attempt to further the discourse around masculinity so as to take it beyond just looking at the problems with toxic masculinity & instead to looking at what positive alternatives could be.

The film is written & directed by Jeremy Heddle, a current Masters of Film & Television student at the Victorian College of the Arts. Previous shorts have screened at the Noosa International Film Festival, the Short+Sweet Film Festival (Melbourne) & Lorne Film Festival.
