Queer Black-Comedy Staged Reading for Major Melbourne Arts Festival

Victoria, Australia
Listed by View details

The Reasonable Grounds:
A dark comedy about privilege, power and high school debating. To be developed with the support of a major Melbourne festival for staged readings in early 2022, with the intention of a fully-staged production at a later date.

Looking for:
- a group (4x) of Melbourne-based queer/femme/non-binary creatives and performers who are willing to perform in the staged reading(s) and develop/rehearse the work.
- skills with comedy, experience devising and workshopping new texts, and an interest in provocative contemporary Australian writing.

Paid. Staged reading 24/25 Jan 2022. Rehearsal dates flexible and payment tbc.

Show Description:
It is the biggest night of Sydney’s academic calendar, the Grand Finale of the Year 12 Interschool Debating Tournament, and the all-boys team from the elite St Imperium college are ready to totally annihilate their sister school - until...

The Reasonable Grounds unfolds in real-time as the boys (played by female and non-binary performers in drag) are locked in a classroom for the duration of the one hour prep-window as they try to formulate their case.

What begins as a funny and fierce satire on privilege, power and the ego of Australia’s next generation of politicians and powerbrokers quickly turns sour when news that one of the boys has been anonymously accused of sexual assault enters the classroom. More timely than ever, The Reasonable Grounds uses queering as both a playful and powerful tool to interrogate the well-documented toxic masculinity, misogyny and internalised homophobia of Australia’s elite boys schools.

Writer/Director Bio:
Emmanuelle is a Melbourne-based actor, writer and director best known for playing the lead role of Marnie in three seasons of the AACTA, Logie and International Emmy Kids Award nominated tween series ‘Mustangs FC’ (ABC-Me/Matchbox Pictures). Her most recent short film as a writer-director, ‘The Odyssey,’ is a whimsical queer-comedy short following two love-struck teens in lockdown, and was commissioned by the Melbourne Queer Film Festival and Victoria Together. The film has since played at festivals internationally and won awards back home including Best Youth Film at the St Kilda Film Festival and Best Diversity Award at the WIFT (Women in Film & Television) V-Fest. Other 2021 performance credits include Clickbait (Netflix) and Ms Fisher’s MODern Murder Mysteries (Channel 7/Acorn TV)
