Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned these protesters as 'çapulcu', meaning 'looter' or 'marauder'. Protesters reappropriated ‘çapulcu’ and deployed it as a humorous tool against Erdogan and the government. They reclaimed this word as 'chapuling', which has taken on personal connotations to Turkish people worldwide. Now it, not only means peacefully fighting for one's rights, but also enjoying life free from oppressive regimes.
The Chapuling Movie aims to introduce the idea of ‘chapuling’ to global audiences and create awareness of how the peaceful and creative activists really are. The film will show Londoners of all walks of life ‘chapuling’ and expressing their solidarity with Turkey.
