WE’LL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS by Jill Hyem
The title comes from the movie “Casablanca” so you would expect perhaps a love story, but this modern comedy is about 3 old school friends who meet up in Paris where one has been living since retiring.

CHARACTERS
Nancy – age 60s
Nancy an ex-headmistress who has retired to Paris and is liberated by her new life. Full of life and rejuvenated by her new found freedom. Speaks some French and sings a little.
She is described as a large handsome woman in her 60s. She wears a colourful print dress and sensible sandals.

Anna – age 60s
A, shy, mousey, downtrodden woman who has been looking after her ailing and demanding husband for the last twenty years. Speaks very little ‘school-girl” French.
She is described as a woman in her 60s, dressed in a dowdy skirt and jacket with salt-and-pepper hair in need of a good cut. Her manner is tentative and apologetic. Anna undergoes a change as Paris works its magic – she has her hair cut in a becoming style and wears more stylish clothes.

Raquel (Rachel) – age 60s (but looks younger due to plastic surgery)
The archetypal cougar looking for love with younger men, who has been “nipped, tucked and enhanced”. A much married fun loving woman. Speaks some French.
She is described as an ash blonde (not essential) with a too-short skirt, a low cut top and stiletto shoes. Clearly, she has had a face-lift so looks younger than Nancy and Anna.

Charlot – age 50s
A native Parisian out-of-work actor who serves as the handyman for the building. A flirty Frenchman. Speaks French fluently, also speaks very good English. Ability to play a guitar would be an advantage. He also sings a little.
He is described as a man in his late 50s, attractive in a craggy, lived-in, essentially French way. He and Nancy have a relaxed, easy friendship.

Madame Boussiron – age 50s
The landlady - a glamorous typical Parisian bitch. Speaks French fluently. Also speaks almost perfect English.
She is described as very chic, dressed in a beautifully cut dark suit with a scarf immaculately arranged.

*Regarding the characters who need to speak French, we plan to have a dialogue coach to assist with this and will spend some time ensuring that accents and pronunciation is credible.
