Next auditions April 2013… Katoomba, Blue Mountains for Yulefest 2013
After the success of ‘The 8; Reindeer Monologues‘, written by Jeff Goode, which Bryan directed and produced as part of the 2012 Yulefest Blue Mountains programme, he has secured the the rights to produce several of the original episodes of The Goon Show, which will be presented live on stage as one of the official Blue Mountains Yulefest 2013 events in Katoomba; performances will be from June 29th to August 3rd… Saturday nights and several Fridays.

Yulefest is one of the largest annual events in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, attracting thousands of visitors to the region.

The Goon Show was first broadcast in 1951 on BBC radio and ran until 1960. There were originally four main cast members; Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine, however Bentine left early in the series, leaving Milligan, Sellers and Secombe to perform as The Goons.

Naturally, there’s no show without cast!

Bryan will be directing this year’s show, and the next step is to hold auditions.

Actors (male – sorry girls, not this time) for the show will be required to reasonably faithfully mimic the character voices of Milligan, Sellers and Secombe, and accents of the original broadcasts, as well as possessing great stage presence, improvisation ability and comedic timing. For your research and enlightenment, check out some recordings of many original broadcasts here.

It is not essential that you necessarily be a visual match for any of the Goons physically, although if you do, that’s terrific.

In addition to the three ‘Goons’, there is the role of the BBC announcer, Wallace Greenslade who in addition to acting as announcer and provider of some of the narrative, also provided several character voices in some episodes.

For a detailed breakdown of characters, the episodes we’ll be producing and some general information about the Goon Show, read this document (link available upon application). It is in PDF form, so you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on the computer you are using to access it.

This show will be run as a co-operative (co-op) production, which means that professional actors will be paid a share of box-office revenue. Based on last year’s event, all actors should expect income approximating the current award as prescribed by the MEAA, and depending on audience sizes, even more. Please do note that while there is every intention to pay actors at this level, this is a co-op production nonetheless and monies paid will be totally dependant on revenue.
