The play, 'Trotsky and Friends', centres around a Viennese cafe in January 1913. Over the course of a day, Leon Trotsky, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Tito, Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung cross paths, their interactions, arguments and celebrations helping to shape the course of their own lives and the future of humanity.

The show will be staged at a Richmond theatre and will run from March 23-31 (all evening shows at this stage). Payment will be as a percentage of profits (to be worked out in consultation with actors). If the show has a good run then there are plans to include it in other Australian festivals in 2016 and beyond.

The play has two acts and a running time of around 75-80 minutes (not including intermission). The set and props will be relatively sparse, in order for audiences to focus more on the dialogue and performances.

Preference will be given to those actors who have a vague resemblance to their characters (where necessary; please look online for relevant photos) and who have appropriate theatre experience.

Auditions will take place in mid-December and rehearsals will start in late January/early February, as I will be overseas for most of January. Please note that the roles of Leon Trotsky and Vladimir Lenin have already been cast.

Job compensation

TBC

Sigmund Freud

Age: 56
Nationality: Austrian (originally from Moravia)

This is a very demanding role, as Sigmund has a lot of dialogue and is responsible for much of the "action". The actor must be good at telling jokes and not be afraid of exploring the dirty side of Freud's nature. Sigmund has a positive, intellectual relationship with Leon, while detesting Carl Jung, his younger (former) disciple.

Males, aged 45 to 65 from Victoria, Australia

  • Ethnicity: White / Caucasian
  • Acting experience: Previous unpaid speaking roles, Previous paid speaking roles

Carl Jung

Age: 37
Nationality: Swiss

A former friend and disciple of Freud, Jung is looking to forge his own path. He is quite straight-laced (and therefore the straight man of the bunch) but he nevertheless has comical insights and has a fierce intellect.

Males, aged 30 to 45 from Victoria, Australia

  • Ethnicity: White / Caucasian
  • Acting experience: Previous unpaid speaking roles, Previous paid speaking roles

Josip Broz 'Tito'

Age: 20.
Nationality: Croatian

Looking to make a name for himself in communist circles, Josip is a blue-collar worker who cares deeply for his homeland, and easily falls under the influence of his more experienced colleagues.

Males, aged 18 to 30 from Victoria, Australia

  • Acting experience: Previous unpaid speaking roles, Previous paid speaking roles

Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Age: 50
Nationality: Austrian

A stern, almost joyless man with a penchant for hunting, whose assassination helped to bring about the start of WWI. He sees himself as superior to everyone around him, yet his presence in the cafe is enjoyed by (almost) everyone.

Males, aged 45 to 60 from Victoria, Australia

  • Ethnicity: White / Caucasian
  • Acting experience: Previous unpaid speaking roles, Previous paid speaking roles

Alma Mahler

Age: 33
Nationality: Austrian

Widow of the renowned composer Gustav Mahler, and an accomplished composer in her own right, Alma had a reputation for going from one man to another. Naturally, the men find her captivating, and she dazzles them with her wit, self-deprecation and sexuality.

(The wrong age was included in the previous role so the role has been changed slightly).

Females, aged 25 to 45 from Victoria, Australia

  • Ethnicity: White / Caucasian
  • Acting experience: Previous unpaid speaking roles, Previous paid speaking roles
